John Bromage, aka Product 19, became one of Pittsburgh’s most established underground dance music DJ’s and is currently establishing himself as a recognizable name in the U.K., Europe and beyond. With major US residencies at The Matrix, Metropol, Club Laga, and Zythos, Product 19 is no stranger to playing for club crowds. He has performed at clubs and parties in cities such as Barcelona, Valencia, La Coruña, Krakow, Naples, Wroclaw, New York City, Philadelphia, Portland, Montreal, Toronto, San Francisco, Cleveland, Washington DC, Detroit, Santiago, Sao Paolo, Curitiba and many more. In 1997, he was asked to compete in the “Battle of the DJ’s” at Buzz, which was based in Washington DC and the biggest club night in the US. In 2000, he travelled to the UK for a three week tour where he performed in London, Bristol, Leeds, Sheffield, Devon, and Skegness. Since then, he was asked to return on numerous occasions and play again based on the audience response he received. He now lives in London. His musical style has ranged over the years from progressive to hard/acid trance to techno. Currently, Product 19 can be heard playing funky and edgy European-influenced techno at raves and larger clubs and funky techno, tribal, tech-house or minimal at smaller clubs and lounges.
Music Production
He continues to pursue his interests in music production. During one of his early trips to England, he worked in the studio with DJ/producer Roland Deem aka Rowland the Bastard (Infected, Bionic Orange, Planet Rhythm, Smitten, Stay Up Forever). The studio session resulted in tracks released on his label, Infected Recordings. He worked with Ant (Powertools, Hydraulix, Stay Up Forever) for the track “Blue Black” on Chris Liberator’s label Maximum/Minimum. Most recently Product has released 4 tracks for the label BR 909 with Rhythm Logistics, Guy McAffer and Ant.
Dance Club & Event Promotion
In addition to DJing and producing, Product 19 has been a music promoter since 1996. Initially, throwing small squat or renegade-style parties, he then founded House of Styles Productions LLC (HOS) in 1997. HOS was responsible for throwing some of the most memorable events in the Pittsburgh/Cleveland area history including the “Detergent Series” (Bounce, Dynamo, Biz, Cheer, Dawn, Joy, and Era). Era was the largest electronic music event in the region. HOS also threw the first all-techno event in Pittsburgh history, SubPhunc 27, with Phryl Productions from Toronto and hosted Liquid in Cleveland with ShortArm Productions. In 1999, HOS, in conjunction with Phryl, produced Integral in Pittsburgh. This was the first Plus 8-style party to be held outside the Detroit/Windsor area which exclusively featured Richie Hawtin, John Acquaviva and other artists from Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 record label. Other events thrown were Proper featuring The Planet of the Drums Tour with Dieselboy, DJ Dara, and AK1200, Supreme which featured the Destiny Tour with Chris Liberator, Christopher Lawrence & OS/2, and Accelerate which hosted the Logical Progression Tour with LTJ Bukem, Nookie & MC Conrad and the Funky Techno Tribe Tour with DJ Sneak, DJ Dan & others. HOS also co-promoted the concert date for The Community Service Tour featuring live performances by Orbital, The Crystal Method, Lo Fidelity All-stars & a DJ set by John Kelley plus additional tours including Derrick May’s Transmat Tour and 2 Moonshine OverAmerica Tours featuring Carl Cox, DJ Dan, Cirrus, DJ Dara among others.
In terms of club promotion, Product 19 has been involved in some of the most ground breaking club nights in Pittsburgh and London. Starting in 1997, HOS along with 5 Star Productions, hosted Atomic at Metropol, one of the first club nights to steadily bring in the world’s top DJ’s and live acts consistently every week. It became one of the largest and longest running nights in Pittsburgh’s history. The diversity of styles and calibre of world-class talent presented ranged from internationally acclaimed DJs such as Carl Cox, Derrick May, Dave Angel, Eddie Richards & Mr.C to North American favourites Dieselboy, Bad Boy Bill, DJ Dan, & DJ Icey. By becoming resident DJ, Product 19 was able to develop the ability to play different styles. Product 19 also hosted and resided at the 3 year+ running weekly, Electrasoul at Memphis Lounge/Zythos, which was the first all-techno based weekly. Styles featured ranged from tech-house, tribal, and tech-trance to hard techno and acid techno. Electrasoul also featured resident DJ’s Wrecked!, Ted Zelch, Colin Pierce, DVS, Frank Gambino and VJs Laboratory Type-0 from Japan.
In 2004, Product 19 became the promoter and resident DJ at London’s longest running techno night, The Nuclear Free Zone, the Liberator DJs’ monthly event. The club night has been running for over 12 years and features Aaron, Chris, & Julian Liberator as rotating residents with guest DJs from all over the world. He was the Sales & Merchandising Manager/Public Relations Assistant for the SUF Collective from 2004-2008 and is a resident DJ and freelance publicist for Family Groove International.
